What is BHRT

BHRT

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is administered to maintain optimal hormone levels.

As men and women age, hormone levels decline. This causes significant changes in the body, including low energy, weight gain, difficulty sleeping, and loss of libido. BHRT helps alleviate these symptoms.

Further, hormone therapy helps men and women reduce the risks of many of the diseases associated with aging, including cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke and senility.

Effects of BHRT

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy will not reverse aging. The goal of natural hormone therapy is to maintain sound levels of hormones to alleviate symptoms and reduce the risks of acquiring many of the diseases associated with aging. The benefits of BHRT include increased energy, weight loss, diminished difficulty of sleeping and improved libido.

Knowing which hormones to replenish and how to adjust the levels for optimal results requires specialized tests and training. Ryan Deweese, M.D. has undergone extensive training in diagnosing, treating, monitoring and adjusting hormone levels for both men and women.

Safety of BHRT

Unlike bioidentical hormones, many of the commonly prescribed synthetic hormones introduce foreign substances that produce toxic by-products, which can cause a wide array of side effects and more serious conditions such as an increased risk of cancer and heart disease.  Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is safe and free of the risks associated with synthetic hormones.

Today, natural bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is an increasingly popular alternative to traditional (synthetic) hormone replacement therapy. Studies have shown the long term health benefits of natural hormone optimization reduces the risks of the diseases associated with aging (i.e. cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke and senility).

Bioidentical hormones are safe and more effective because they are biologically identical to the molecular structure of the hormones found in your body. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is free of the risks associated with synthetic hormones.

Types of BHRT

Below is a partial list of hormones typically tested and considered for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy at Proactive Health Clinics:

  • Estrogen
  • Progesterone
  • Testosterone
  • DHEA
  • Thyroid
  • Melatonin
  • Pregnenolone

Estrogen

Strengthens:

  • Muscle Tone
  • Skin Smoothness
  • Hair Texture
  • Sex Drive
  • Cardiovascular Functioning

Deters:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Heart Disease
  • Hot Flashes
  • Mood Swings
  • Sleep Disturbances
  • Vaginal dryness/itching/burning

Contrary to popular belief, both women and men create estrogen. In women, estrogen—along with progesterone—plays a key role in mood, sexual development, ovulation and lactation after pregnancy, and prevention of heart disease. In men, when estrogen levels are low or unbalanced, the risk of stroke and heart disease soars.

Progesterone

Boosts:

  • Bone Growth
  • Healthy Heart Functions
  • Mood & Sense Of Well-Being

Prevents:

  • Water-Retention
  • Bloating
  • Mood swings

Women produce progesterone after they ovulate to prepare the lining of the uterus for pregnancy. This hormone is the life-long partner of estrogen. Estrogen and progesterone are synergetic hormones that balance each other, helping to promote optimal female health.

Testosterone

Enhances:

  • Sex Drive
  • Energy
  • Bone Density & Formation
  • Muscle Strength & Growth
  • Mood & Sense of Well-Being
  • Sleep cycle

Decreases:

  • Body Fat
  • Blood Pressure
  • Cholesterol Levels

Though it is often thought of as a male hormone, testosterone is a vital sex hormone in both men and women. For both sexes it plays an important role in puberty, and then begins to decline steadily after age 30. Maintaining optimum levels of testosterone is vital for both sexes throughout their lives.

DHEA

Improves:

  • Immune Response
  • Sex Drive
  • Metabolism
  • Emotional Stability
  • Memory
  • Cognitive Functions

Lowers:

  • Risk of Cancer
  • Risk of Heart Disease

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) can be a powerful antioxidant with age-resisting capabilities. That is why it is often called “the mother of all hormones.” It is the primary building block from which our bodies makes estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone hormones that make us feel and look good.

Thyroid

Improves (signs of underactive thyroid):

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of Motivation
  • Dry Skin
  • Hair Loss
  • Cold Intolerance
  • Weight Gain

Improves (signs of overactive thyroid):

  • Heart Palpitations
  • Weight Loss
  • Anxiety
  • Heat Intolerance
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Trembling Hands
  • Muscle Weakness

Thyroid hormone is critical for almost every bodily function. It regulates such things as your body’s metabolism, temperature, and nervous system.  Healthy levels have been shown to decrease the risk of coronary artery disease. Optimal levels help maintain energy as well as provide mental clarity and focus.  In addition, thyroid hormone plays an important role in the integrity of hair, skin and nails.

Melatonin

Improves:

  • Sleep Patterns
  • Immune System

Melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm and plays a key role in healthy sleep cycles. Melatonin is also known to be a powerful antioxidant and potential anti-cancer agent, because it is one of the greatest free radical scavengers in the body.

Pregnenolone

Improves:

  • Memory
  • Mental Clarity

Research shows the pregnenolone can help prevent aging-related mental decline. It is also a necessary building block for creating DHEA.

Benefits for Women

It’s very common for women over age 35 to experience symptoms associated with natural declines in hormone production. These symptoms can occur before, during and after menopause:

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Irritability, anxiety and depression
  • Fatigue
  • Trouble concentrating, “brain fog”
  • Decreased interest in sex
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Night sweats
  • Yeast infections
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Acne
  • Hair loss
  • Unusually heavy, irregular, or painful periods
  • Memory problems
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Osteoporosis
